October 18, 2002, Newsletter Issue #40: Dealing with mold

Tip of the Week

What should I do to prep a bathroom for painting that has some mold on the ceiling?

It is very important not only to get rid of the mold, but to kill it. Even
if it looks like it is all gone, it is possible for the mold to spread
through the house, causing some real health problems. Some types of mold are
more of a health threat than asbestos.
If the source of the water (mold grows in a damp environment) is from above
the ceiling, you should remove the sheetrock or plaster from the ceiling,
spray the area with a milgicide, and replace the ceiling. Milgicide can be
purchased from a commercial cleaning products distributor.
If there is no water source above the ceiling, consider installing a vent
fan to vent the moist air outside. Then scrape the mold and apply milgicide.
Prime the area with a sealer (Kilz is a good brand) before painting.
