October 4, 2002, Newsletter Issue #38: Removing wallpaper

Tip of the Week

There are two methods of removing wallpaper. Both involve perforating the paper. There is a great machine available to perforate called the Paper Tiger. It is available at most DIY, paint, and wallpaper stores. It is a plastic dome about three inches in diameter with toothed wheels underneath. You just roll it over the paper to poke as many holes as possible.

The first method is steaming. Your rental yard will rent a wallpaper steamer which forces steam through the paper to loosen the glue. You then use a scraper to peel the paper from the wall.

The second method utilizes a liquid (or gel) wallpaper stripper. After the paper has been perforated, liquid stripper is applied with a roller, or sprayed with a garden sprayer- the kind you pump up. Gel stripper is applied with a brush or roller. You then use a scraper to lift the paper from the wall. If (when) you hit a spot that is still stuck, just apply more stripper and let it soak in.

I prefer the liquid sprayer method. I think that is because I really enjoy making a mess, though. Be sure to cover your carpet with tarps or drop cloths whichever method you choose.
