December 13, 2002, Newsletter Issue #48: Christmas light safety

Tip of the Week

Christmas lights are beautiful, but dangerous. It is very easy to overload a lighting circuit with too many lights.
* Do not "stack" the plugs on several strings of lights.
* Buy a surge suppressor (like your computer equipment is plugged into) with an integrated circuit breaker. Then plug the strings of lights into the protected device.
* For outdoor lights, use an extension cord that is designed to be used outdoors.
* Use an extension cord that has a built-in Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter.
* Check each string of lights for frayed or broken insulation.
* If the lights trip a breaker, find out why instead of just resetting the breaker.
* Do not leave the lights on when you are away, or asleep.
