December 20, 2002, Newsletter Issue #49: Installing a ledger board

Tip of the Week

Dear Home Improvement Guru;
Having a tough time drilling masonry. Using .5 inch bit. What size bit and bolt combo should I use and what is the best bit out there? Setting ledger for deck. Thanks.

Dear DIY`er;
Most DIY stores have a tool rental department. Lowe´s and Home Depot have this at the front of the store. They will rent you a rotary hammer and appropriate bit for about $20. If you were to purchase it, a quality 1/2 inch masonry bit will cost almost that much without the drill. Personally, I like lead anchors with lag bolts and washers to secure a ledger to masonry. A 3/8 inch lag bolt every 16 inches is sufficient. The clerk in the fasteners aisle will help you find the right bolt and anchor. Be careful with the rotary hammer. It is a powerful drill that not only turns the bit, but also hammers it about a jillion times a minute. Pull the bit out of the hole several times while drilling. This cleans out the hole so drilling is easier and the bit won´t be so liable to bind. Good luck.
