May 3, 2002, Newsletter Issue #16: Painting a room

Tip of the Week

Want to paint the entire room in less than a day? Get prepared first. Spread tarps or drop cloths on the floor. For carpeted rooms, buy a roll of carper protector from your DIY store. Think of it as a roll of Scotch tape which is two feet wide.
Mask the surfaces which you don`t want to paint, such as trim, shelves, and doors (don`t worry about the glass - see tip #69196).
From your local rental store, rent an airless sprayer. They will explain to you how to use it. Tell them what you are painting, and what type of paint you are using. (Latex is cleaned up with soap and water.)
With the tip about a foot from the surface, start moving the gun before pulling the trigger. Continue moving the gun after you release the trigger. DON`T STOP while the trigger is pulled. You will catch on in no time.
If you are painting different colors, paint all of one color. Let it dry, and mask the new paint before spraying the next color.
Spray the walls first, and the ceiling last. That way, you won`t have overspray on the floor to walk in.
When finished, clean the sprayer according to instructions. Roll up the drop cloths, and enjoy your new room.
