June 28, 2002, Newsletter Issue #24: Locate your utilities

Tip of the Week

Before starting any project which involves digging in your yard, have your utilities located professionally. For example, let`s say you want to build a fence across your back yard. There is a strong possibility that the electrical "mains" are buried in the easement, especially in newer subdivisions. If you hit an electrical line with a post hole digger, it will take all the fun out of the job.

At least in my area of the country, there is no charge for having utilities located. Check the yellow pages under Utilities, or call the power company for the number to call. They will mark the location of electrical, phone, cable, gas, sewer, and water lines. They can`t, however, tell you how deep these lines are buried. If you must dig within 2 feet of a marked line, do it by hand and go slow.
