July 26, 2002, Newsletter Issue #28: Grab bars

Tip of the Week

While you are working on your bathroom, consider beefing up the walls behind the tub or shower so that grab bars can be installed later.

While the walls are open, you can fit a 2X10 block between the studs that surround the tub. Measure up from the lip of the new tub about a foot, cut a block to fit tightly between the studs (usually 14 1/2 inches), and screw or nail securely. Then sheet rock and finish the walls as planned. Then, when you decide grab bars are in order, they can be mounted safely and securely.

If you want grab bars installed, but do not have blocking in the walls, don`t dispair. You can still mount them directly to the existing studs. Since grab bars are rarely made to fit existing studs, you will have to locate the studs with a stud finder. Then angle the grab bar so that both ends land on a stud.
