August 9, 2002, Newsletter Issue #30: Make your house visible.

Tip of the Week

You know your address, but can an emergency worker find your house? You know where the address numbers are located, but can someone who is not familiar with your house see them? Please consider installing large, reflective numbers where they can be seen from the street by a police officer, or fireman or EMT.

The numbers should be large enough to be easily read from the street in a moving vehicle. It is also a good idea to locate them where the porch light will shine on them.

In my neighborhood, almost everyone has the address numbers painted on the curb in front of the house. Most of us, however, don`t consider the fact that there is on-street parking. If a car is parked in front of the house, the numbers can`t be seen.

Make sure that there are no shrubs or tree branches to block the view. If you park your boat in the driveway, make sure it doesn`t block the view from either direction.

Remember, aesthetics are nice, but in an emergency, seconds are more important.
