September 27, 2002, Newsletter Issue #37: Painting appliances

Tip of the Week

A reader recently wrote,
"Is it possible to paint oven doors? What type of paint should be used and
is there any special preperations that need to done? I have a double oven
with a harvest gold color and was looking to paint it black."

My answer: "Yes, it is possible. However, it should be done professionally. In order for
the paint to stick, it must be electrostatically bonded to the steel. This
takes specialized equipment and experience. Check the yellow pages. In my
part of the country the job would cost around $150 to $200."

In this painting process, the appliance is electrically charged. The paint is vaporized into a fine mist which is attracted to the electrical charge. While you are at it, you might as well have all your appliances painted at the same time. You won`t be able to use any painted appliance for 24 to 48 hours, but what the heck. Use the money you would have spent on new appliances to eat at a fancy restaurant.
