December 19, 2003, Newsletter Issue #85: Nails or screws?

Tip of the Week

Lloyd;
You sure can. I do quite a bit of framing with screws instead of nails. It`s much easier to hold 2 pieces of lumber with 1 hand and screw with the other that to drive a nail. If you can find them, use 3" gold deck screws. The silver colored ones usually strip the head before you can run them all the way in. Also, get a screw starter for your screw gun. It is basically a shaft with a moveable sleeve. You put the screw onto the tip and slide the sleeve over the screw. The sleeve will hold the screw for you while you start it. Then, as you run the screw in, the sleeve is pushed back.
