August 1, 2003, Newsletter Issue #68: Wiring an old chandelier

1

Tip of the Week

Hi there! I recently purchased an old (1970`s)chandelier from a thrift store and am in the process of refinishing and rewiring it. The job itself is really easy but I have a question about the lack of a ground wire in this chandelier. I very carefully took apart the whole unit (it has 6 branch arms with low voltage sockets) and can see how the thing is wired together (easy to recreate) but there is not a ground wire to be found. Will this create a problem when it is installed in the ceiling? Is there any safe/easy way to install a ground wire myself? Is a ground wire necessary if there wasn`t one to begin with? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Dear DIY´er;
There is no need to ground the individual sockets. However, you can ground the entire fixture easily. The ground wire in the ceiling box can be wrapped around the screws that hold the canopy to the ceiling. The screws are in contact with the fixture body, so the ground path is complete.
