Tip of the Week

Dear Home Improvement Guru;
I have carpeting with a pad under it in my basement which has been water damaged. I hired a professional to suck what water he could out of it. It seems he got most of it out, but still seems kind of wet. I have fans on it with de-humidifiers running, a fireplace roaring. Do you have any tips to help speed up the drying process..and what about if it develops an odor?. Thank you.

Dear DIY`er;
You are on the right track. You might want to check with a rental yard for floor dryers. They are high volume fans that blow directly across the floor. The dehumidifiers are a good idea, too. To help control the odor, buy 3 or 4 bags of charcoal, cut them open, and let the fans blow across them. Charcoal is an excellent air filter. If the water was clean, you shouldn´t have much of an odor problem. If the damage was from a sewer backup or something similar, I suggest having the carpet professionally cleaned and sanitized because of the potential for mold and other contaminants. Let me know how it turns out.
