June 14, 2002, Newsletter Issue #22: Oil stains on concrete

Tip of the Week

Cleaning the oil stains off the garage floor isn`t as hard as you might think.
Start by sweeping the dirt off the stain. Then spread a thick layer of kitty litter over the stained area. Kitty litter is usually less expensive than Oil-Dry, especially if you get it at a wholesale club. If you find Oil-Dry cheaper than kitty litter, by all means use it. Leave the kitty litter on the stain overnight, then sweep it away and reapply.
Repeat this step until the concrete is dry but still stained.
Then pour mineral spirits, available in the paint department, on the stain. Let it soak in and put more on. When the concrete won`t soak up any more, scrub the stain with a stiff brush.
Cover the area with more kitty litter overnight. You may need to repeat the process several times, depending on how deeply the concrete is stained, but the stain will eventually go away.
As far as your teenager getting something pierced, tell them that you will pierce something, but it will be with a golf shoe.
