July 12, 2002, Newsletter Issue #26: Wiring your kitchen

Tip of the Week

Modern electrical codes require a lot of wiring for a residential kitchen.

First, the outlets above the counter must be divided into two circuits of twenty amps each. Each of these circuits must be protected by a ground fault circuit interrupter, with the exception of the refrigerator outlet.

The dishwasher and garbage disposal may be on the same circuit.

The microwave must be on its own circuit.

The electric oven and electric cooktop, or the range, will require their own separate 220 volt circuits.

The lights must be on a lighting circuit.

Each of these rules is in place for a very good reason, which is to protect your family and your home. I have lost track of the number of homes I have replaced because of fires caused by improper wiring. Imagine losing everything you own to a fire. The inconvenience of being out of your home for six months while it is rebuilt is negligible when compared to the loss of pictures, letters, collections, and memories which can`t be replaced.

PLEASE make sure that electrical wiring is done properly.
