July 19, 2002, Newsletter Issue #27: What is standard?

Tip of the Week

I get lots of questions about "standards" in construction, like, "What is the correct height for a bar top?" The answers are easy: anywhere it is comfortable for you.

Most kitchen countertops are the same height because the cabinet industry established a standard. True, most people find standard countertop height to be comfortable, but there is no law that says you must follow the norm. If you are taller than the average person, you can have your countertops raised. People in wheelchairs need everything to be lower.

If you prefer your dining room light fixture to be 24 inches above the table, then put it there. After all, it is YOUR home.

If you want your dishwasher to be raised off the floor for easier access, you can add a storage drawer below it. Different working heights in kitchen countertops add an elegant touch to modern kitchens.

Your home is probably your biggest investment. It is where you go to relax. It should be as comfortable as possible, even if that means it doesn`t look like everyone else`s.
