Tip of the Week

I have started painting some doors with gloss paint. How do I get a nice
even finish (particularly now that I`ve started improperly!)

I replied:
Ann;
The bad news is: gloss paint will tend to exaggerate the flaws in your
doors. The good news is: with a little work, you can make them look good.
You didn`t say exactly what the problem is, but the remedy is the same.
You will need to scuff the paint with sandpaper until the shine is gone.
Then use wood filler (for deep marks), or spackle (for small defects) to
make the surface smooth. Apply the product, let it dry, and sand it smooth
with fine sandpaper.
The next step is to apply a good quality primer in a smooth, even coat.
After the primer dries, examine the doors for flaws. They will be easier to
see after the primer coat. If there are flaws, just fill with spackle again
and sand. Reapply primer on these spots.
Now you can apply the gloss coat. If you want a perfect job, rent a spray
rig from your rental store and apply several THIN coats. If you can live
with less than perfect, use a roller with a short nap to apply several
coats.
