November 7, 2003, Newsletter Issue #80: Crooked ceiling

Tip of the Week

We are installing new cabinents (36" cabinets on an 8` wall)only to realize that the ceiling is crooked. There is a 1" differance from one end of the cabinets to the other. The problem being we have rather large crown molding to add and this 1" difference is going to show. Any ideas on how to correct it, if at all possible?

Dear DIY`er;
My best suggestion is to build a soffit. It is basically a box that goes from the top of the cabinets to the ceiling. I would make it come out from the wall 18". Your cabinets are 12", your crown molding will come out from the wall about 2", and the remaining 4" will make an elegant backdrop for the crown. Of course, the soffit should be level at the bottom and butt up next to the ceiling. The more height you can give the soffit, the less obvious the 1" slant will be.
