September 19, 2003, Newsletter Issue #74: Water shutoff

Tip of the Week

I MOVED INTO A HOuse THAT HAS FINISHED BASEMENT. i CAN`T FIND THE MAIN WATER SHUT OFF. ANY IDEA WHAT I CAN DO?

The water main usually comes into the house from the street. Find the water meter and mentally draw a straight line from the meter to the basement. As a rule, that is where the shutoff will be. The shutoff should be on the basement wall, and will look like a sillcock handle. In an emergency, you can shut the water off at the meter with a crescent wrench.
If you still can`t find it, maybe because there is none, ask the city (or your water supplier) to show you how to shut it off.
