September 13, 2002, Newsletter Issue #35: More chores for Autumn

Tip of the Week

Most people don`t think about their gutters until a problem develops. Autumn is the time to make sure they are cleaned out. If the gutters fill up with leaves, the flow of water will be stopped. If the gutters are full of water when the weather turns cold, the water freezes, expands, and puts extra strain on the gutter supports. It can also form an ice dam, which can cause water damage to your roof and attic.
While you are cleaning out your gutters, check the supports to make sure they are tight. If you find that you need to re-tighten them, check the slope of each gutter. It should slope toward the downspout.
While you are up there anyway, check the joints, if you have any. If the joints don`t hold water, buy some gutter caulk and seal the joints from the top side.
Perhaps the most important tip on caring for your gutters is this: if you do not feel comfortable on a ladder, get someone to do the work for you. Boy Scouts are always looking for a good turn to do.
