December 12, 2003, Newsletter Issue #84: Sheet rock repair

Tip of the Week

This is an easy question that requires a complicated answer, which is, it depends.
A quick, easy, temporary fix is to use caulk to fill the crack. Run a bead of caulk down the crack and smooth it with a wet finger, or a wet paintbrush. Then repaint.
For a permanent repair you must first figure out why it cracked. Is it because the house has settled? Or is it because of movement over a door? Are there nail pops around the crack?
After the cause has been repaired, a permanent fix requires that you apply sheet rock tape over the crack, then several coats of sheet rock mud, sanding smooth between coats.
